It Must Be a Trick

By Sarah Hinnenkamp

After almost two years of wedded bliss and nearly nine years as an official couple, I’d like to think I know my husband quite well. Lately I’m finding that my Rolodex file of his recorded likes and dislikes is completely wrong. Or is it?

Last week Terry came home from a shopping trip with ginger snap cookies in hand and polished them off in record time.

“I thought you didn’t like ginger snap cookies,” I said.

“No. That’s you,” he said. “I have always loved these cookies.”

Really. The look of confusion painted itself across my face.

Terry went on to inform me that back in 2008 I even made him a batch of those cookies. I’m sure it wasn’t from scratch, probably from a mix at the grocery store. And I’m pretty sure he made that date up – I don’t know how he could remember the year.

So, my memory isn’t perfect, but I suppose I knew that. I made a mental note about ginger snap cookies and moved on with my life – briefly.

I can accept being wrong about one thing, but when we arrived at the second cookie issue in just a matter of days, I started to become skeptical.

Rewind six years and I’m standing in the kitchen of my north Fargo condo, super excited to be mixing up peanut butter cookies – one of my favorites. I asked Terry if he liked that type of cookie and he said, “No, not really.”

Sad.

I remember thinking I could still make them for myself but I didn’t want to be the only one eating them so I just didn’t make them again for a very long time.

This week while at a fancy dessert shop in Fargo, Terry bought a bag of a dozen peanut butter cookies for his dessert. Terribly confused, I thought he was pretending to buy them to see if I was paying attention, but he argued otherwise.

“I like peanut butter cookies, Sarah,” he said. “We’ve had this conversation several times and you’re always shocked

I was shocked.

I just stared at him, dumbfounded. He must be planning to eat those 12 cookies to prove that I don’t know him at all, or to keep me guessing, or…maybe he really did like peanut butter cookies.

It appeared I had entered the Twilight Zone of Cookie Choices. As a control freak I really wanted to get to the bottom of what just happened, but that would have put to waste a perfect dozen peanut butter cookies.

So I did what anyone would do – I got over myself and took a giant bite of a peanut butter cookie.

I guess I’ll just have to start paying more attention.
