The Grommesh family woke up Sunday morning in a home filled with ten years of memories. While the memories will remain, the existing home will not. After being ambushed by the “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” crew, the Grommeshes had a matter of hours to pack up and say good-bye to the walls that held birthday parties, Christmas dinners and milestones.
After hopping in a limo with airline tickets to the Bahamas, the moving crew and volunteers got to work.
What did it take to move ten years of accumulated belongings? A huge moving truck, dollies, moving blankets and willing volunteers. Oh yeah, and one hour and 17 minutes to clear out the house.
Jon Lamke volunteered to lug items out of the house. He wanted to be part of the experience of such a “big” event. He also looked forward to helping a family in need and he jumped at the opportunity to pitch in.
“I felt it was my duty to help out,” Lamke says. “It made me feel good.”
Lamke has moved six times himself and has also helped many friends and neighbors move. While he has no professional moving experience, he handled the family’s items with care, so whatever they need will be ready for them in their new home when they arrive back to Minnesota.
