For so many people in the F-M area, this week is about helping, building hope and being part of something extreme. If you haven’t gotten to help out so far, don’t worry, there is a specific event that needs hundreds of volunteers. Friday at 3 p.m. “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” will try to set a new record with the help of the Grommesh family’s non-profit organization, Hope Inc. The event will happen at south Moorhead’s Miracle Field.
Judy Siegle wears many hats: that of a speaker, author and paralympian and this week she is representing her local Rotary club as a contact for the world record attempt. Siegle was contacted on Sunday about the possibility of such an attempt and got the thumbs up on Tuesday that the attempt would move forward.
Siegle started by reaching out to connections in the area to try and get as many wheelchairs as possible to Miracle Field.
“The whole regional is just buzzing about this,” Siegle says.
Siegle is serving as the primary Rotary contact for this event. Rotary built Miracle Field in south Moorhead and the Grommesh family is one of the families that uses the field.
Siegle got to know the Grommesh family years ago and is excited to be part of a record attempt. She describes this as a time of celebration and is happy to help put this surprise together for them.
“It’s pure joy to be involved in something like this,” Siegle says
Earlier this week, “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” cast member Paige Hemmis helped put the call out for the event. The wheelchairs will be put in a pattern to spell “hope” because that’s what this week is all about.
The mission of Hope Inc. has always been about inclusion; making sure family and friends are united together. Creating opportunities and activities for people using wheelchairs is the primary focus however, including family and friends together on one field, in one game, provides the experience that we are all one.
“We are looking for 250 to 300 wheelchairs. People don’t need to be in wheelchairs, it can be all of us, but we need people to come out,” Hemmis says.
